The Owensboro Lions Club
1. Describe your organization. -The Owensboro Lions Club, which is celebrating 100 years of service to the Owensboro area as a chapter of Lions Clubs International in 2020, works “To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs.
2. How do I apply to be a member? Application? Interview? - Any person of legal majority and good moral character and good reputation in his/her community, may be nominated for and granted membership in the Owensboro Lions Club. Interested applicants should complete an application which must be signed by a member in good standing who will act as sponsor and be submitted to the board for consideration and approval.
3. When is your meeting? Location? - The Owensboro Lions Club meets at noon on the first and third Tuesday of each month at the Owensboro Country Club at 400 East Byers Avenue.
4. What do you offer to the community? - The club annually awards $5000 in scholarships to local colleges and the Wendell Foster Center, collects and prepares used eyeglasses for recycling, collaborates with the Owensboro Help Office to provide vision exams and eyeglasses to needy adults and children, rings bells to support the Salvation Army kettle drive, supports work at the Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation, supports training guide dogs at Leader Dogs for the Blind, honors individual requests for assistance and more.
5. Events? - We host Soap Box Derby Races (the annual local race and three 2-day Rally Races), set up our baseball pitch booth at the Owensboro Barbecue Festival and at the Reid’s Apple Festival, host Breakfast With Santa in December and maintain benches with advertising which are placed at various locations around town.
6. Anything else you would like to add? – The Club is currently exploring ways to get involved in the fight against diabetes.
